Dr. Victor Catigbe Cañezo Jr., is now the new OIC- University President of Naval State University.
Unanimously appointed by the members of the NSU- Board of Regents, Dr. Canezo will now be leading the 6-year old university towards victorious education as the new OIC-University President following the stint of OIC-President, Dr. Matias A. Bentor, Jr.
“Vic”.,37-year old native of Masagongsong, Kawayan, Biliran and the son of the late Victor Arevalo Canezo, II of Higatangan, Naval, Biliran and Lolita Catigbe Canezo of Masagongsong, Kawayan, Biliran, served as the former Acting University and Board Secretary for one (1) year and six (6) months and the Dean of the NSU- College of Education for four fruitful years.
For the record, Dr. Canezo is the youngest appointed OIC president in the history of the institution and probably the youngest among the presidents of Higher Education Institutions in the Philippines. The new president’s term just commenced last June 1.
AN ACCOMPLISHED EDUCATOR
The genesis of Dr. Canezo’s academic experience started at Masagongsong Elementary School and eventually at Kawayan National High School where he was a consistent honor student. He finished his undergraduate studies in Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English and Literature at Leyte Normal University and received his Master’s degree at Xavier University, Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro City as a full scholar of the Institute for the Development of Educational Administrator (IDEA) and received his Doctor of Education at Naval State University-Main Campus.
His outstanding performances as a classroom teacher, coach, trainer, and school publication and student council adviser steered him to various managerial positions such as the Head of the Academic and Student Affairs of the Cathedral School of La Naval; the Human Resource Officer, Member Development Officer and as a Board Recorder of the Board of Directors of the Biliran Electric Cooperative (BILECO).
ÂÂ Being a dedicated and committed academician, he has received numerous distinctions and awards. The worth mentioning, he was given recognition as a Senior Accreditor of the Accrediting Agencies of Chartered Colleges and Universities in The Philippines (AACCUP); research paper presenter in the Higher Education Forum, Hong Kong International Conference on Education, Psychology, and Society last December at Hong Kong and also published a number of studies in internationally-refereed journals. He was also adjudged as one of the 2012 Outstanding School Paper Advisers in the Philippines awarded by the Department of Education, held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and the Division of Biliran Campus Journalism consultant.
His attendance and participation to several international, national and local training and seminars further enhanced and honed his knowledge and skills as an educator and leader. Among these workshops are on the 10TH QS World Class, Classroom for World University Leaders, Westin Taipei, Taiwan last March, Executive Management and Leadership, Teacher Education, K – 12 Curriculum, Outcomes-Based Education, Understanding by Design, Whole School Approach, Journalism and Teaching Methodologies and Strategies, etc.
Just recently, in an unprecedented feat, he passed the March 2017 Career Executive Service Officer written examination marking as the only CESO passer in the university. He also qualified in the final stage and is now waiting for the results, of the elusive 2017 Philippine Higher Education Career System Executive Development Program (Phil-HECS EDP), a program envisioned to recruit, select, and develop senior executives in the Philippine higher education based on merit, thereby improving the quality of Philippine higher education and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the institutional governance of SUCs by promoting accountability and strengthening the leadership and management competencies of SUC presidents.
A VICTORIOUS DEAN
Driven by sheer passion and untainted commitment, the incumbency of Dr. Canezo as the dean of the College of Education for almost four years has been an impetus to myriad positive changes. In his three young years as a dean, he has made remarkable accolades for the college and the university. Not to mention, in his incumbency, the college was declared twice as the Best College/ Bureau per Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Ranking for year 2015 and 2016 and that two of its programs, Bachelors of Elementary and Secondary Education, were granted its CHED Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC), the first to be awarded COPC in entire Region 8. It was also during his leadership that the BSED Program was granted accreditation Level III Phase 2 and BEED Program Level II by the AACCUP.
Further, as a visionary and proactive leader, he led in the crafting of the college’s strategic direction, the first among all colleges, dubbed as “The Victorious Education,” as an initiative to lobby various transformations and development in the areas of instruction, research, extension and production services. One of its apparent manifestations was the exponential progress of the research publications of the faculty and the increase of the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) passing percentage and to note, the college has produced a National Top Notcher (6th Placer).
He has also co-authored the following books in Professional Education 1.) The Learner’s Development and Environment. 2.) Experiencing the Teaching-Learning Process 3.) Technology in the Learning Environment 4.) Exploring the Curriculum 5.) Learning Assessment Strategies. 5.) On Becoming a Teacher.
A prodigal and innovative dean possessing a resilient and open-minded attitude with proven skills in leadership jived with reputable academic background and exposure to international training, conferences, an accomplished researcher, DR. VICTOR C. CANEZO III., with the heart to serve and passion for leading, is surefire a leader fitted to steer the course of a ‘Victorious’ Naval State University.
