KAWAYAN, Biliran – At 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15, a newly-purchased elf truck dived off from the wharf of Kawayan while being loaded to M/B Viga Express, which also caused the boat to sink.
M/B Viga Express is a passenger and cargo motorboat from Maripipi, known also for hauling heavy cargoes and vehicles for many years.
According to the crew, while loading the truck, the bow of the motorboat just happened to broke resulting the sea water entered the halfway part of M/B Viga Express.
“Ever since mao na ang way. Kaya ra man na ang elf. Kaya man gani ang copras na 27 tons, kana pa nga elf na wala pa na 5 tons”, said one of the crew members.
He added that the problem might have been on the wrong positioning of the plank.
According to PO3 Oliver Canada, Commander Coastguard Substation-Naval who was there to assess the incident, “so far, there was no oil spill occured”.
Meanwhile, no person reported to be harmed and the said motoboat is being towed back to Maripipi island by M/B Maria Lourdes at around 5p.m.
Felisa Mulles, a council member in Maripipi is both the owner of the motorboat and the elf truck. The truck is also reported to be in good condition.
Maria Lourdes and Viga Express are the only boats that carry passengers and cargos from Maripipi to Naval and vice versa.
And with this incident, it is evident that there will be no big boats set to sail from Maripipi to Naval.
Currently, only small boats are available, with the route: Maripipi to Kawayan. – BiliranIsland.com
