NAVAL, Biliran – As a precautionary measure and with the imminent threat on COVID-19 due to its increasing cases in the country, two upcoming big events in Biliran province were cancelled.
Naval Mayor Gerard Roger M. Espina in his Facebook account post on Friday, said the cancellation of the 2020 Higatangan Island Summer Festival (HISF) was cancelled due to “imminent threat of COVID-19,” and the facts and circumstances surrounding therein.
HISF is a crowd-drawing annual summer festival led by LGU-Naval held in the famous Higatangan Island known for its shifting sandbar.
The 2019 summer fest introduced new activities such as Cliff Jumping, Manta Tow, Dive at Capella Del Mar, and other fun-filled activities.
Also, the Provincial Women’s Congress Celebration in Biliran was cancelled.
“Wala munang Women’s Congress Celebration tayo this March 17,” Biliran Governor Rogelio J. Espina posted in his Facebook account.
The announcement of Governor Espina on the cancellation of the provincial women’s congress came after the DOH confirmed a local transmission case of COVID-19 in the country on March 6.
He said the recent news on COVID-19 will definitely affect future activities in the whole country and in our province.
Dr. Cecil M. Espina, wife of Governor Espina, and the president of the Provincial Council for Women’s Welfare Incorporated (PCWWI) in Biliran, said PCWWI and the WORD KALIPI are also in concurrence with the cancellation of the Women’s Congress.
“It is better safe than be sorry later,” the PCWWI president said emphasizing the protection of the women member-participants on the possibility of contracting illnesses referring to the COVID-19.
“The Provincial Women’s 2020 Congress is cancelled (or probably postponed indefinitely),” Dr. Espina said despite the fact that preparations are all set for the event, municipalities have prepared, and the participants are all set. (ldl/rsv/PIA Biliran)
