Newly retired teacher dies of electrocution

Biliran, Biliran— A newly retired faculty member of the Biliran Province State (BiPSU) succumbed after he fell from a gmelina tree after he was electrocuted about 12:40 p.m. (Aug. 24) in Brgy. San Isidro here.

The victim was identified as Fortunato Olasiman, 65, single, retired faculty member of BiPSU Biliran Campus, and a resident of the said barangay.

Initial investigation conducted by the local police disclosed that the victim was clearing the branches of a gmelina tree when the branch he cut accidentally struck the primary electric line of the Biliran Electric Cooperative (Bileco). A portion of the tree branch hit the victim, electrocuting him in the process. Because of the strong electric current, the victim was thrown to the ground head first, causing him to loss consciousness upon reaching the ground.

Dr. Jonathan Antonio and Dr. Gabino Velasquez of the Municipal Health Office of Biliran, who responded to the area, declared the victim dead about 1:05 p.m.

Bileco late afternoon today issued a statement of sympathy to the family of the victim.

The coop promise to extend financial support to the bereaved family.
