NAVAL, Biliran — The provincial government of Biliran, headed by Governor Rogelio Espina, launched on Thursday, Apr. 16, the “KADIWA ni Ani at Kita” market outlet at the provincial capitol grounds in this municipality amid the COVID-19 crisis and enhanced border closure in the entire province of Biliran.
The initiative is in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and Capiñahan Rural Improvement Club, a farmers’ organization.
DA-8 Regional Executive Director Angel Enriquez attended the launching activity along with the municipal agricultural officers of the eight municipalities of Biliran and key personnel of the Office of the Provincial Agricultural Services (OPAS).
Francis Rosaroso, chief of the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section of DA-8 said, the KADIWA market in Naval is the first KADIWA outlet launched in the entire Eastern Visayas region.
KADIWA stands for KAtuwang sa DIwa at GaWA Para sa Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita for farmers and fisherfolks.
The KADIWA market outlet aims at providing a venue to help farmers sell their products amid the present crisis situation.
The KADIWA market also helps public to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat products of high quality aside from canned goods for the duration of the enhanced border closure and community quarantine.
The KADIWA market is also intended to open not only during this health crisis but to be sustained for the benefit of both farmers and consumers.
Jaime Casas, OPAS chief, informed that the KADIWA market outlet at the capitol grounds in Brgy. Calumpang, Naval is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Farmers and local producers from other municipalities of the province are also welcome to sell their products not only this quarantine period but as long as the market outlet operates.
In a separate interview at the PIA’s radio program, Rosaroso said all eight municipalities in the province of Biliran were also given bags of high quality rice and assorted vegetable seeds for distribution at their respective municipalities to encourage residents to do backyard and communal gardening to attain self-food sufficiency and food-secured community.
“The province of Biliran is 180 percent rice sufficient. Thus, if more people are encouraged to grow their own foods, Biliranons will met the national government’s thrust of making foods available, accessible, and affordable within the area,” Rosaroso added. (ldl/mlt/PIA8 Biliran)
